London is a sporting paradise. From football to tennis, rugby to cricket, and marathons to motorsport, the city hosts masses of world-class sporting events each and every year.

Although getting tickets to these events can often come with a pretty sizable price tag, there are still lots of ways you can enjoy live sports in the capital without spending a penny. Whether you’re a local or just enjoying a city break, here are some of the ways you can watch live sports for free in London.

Public Screenings During Major Events

One of the best ways to watch a major sporting event for free is through the various public screenings. During the summer, London has plenty of outdoor screenings – especially when events like Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the big football tournaments (like the Euros or the World Cup) are in play.

Wimbledon is the perfect example. Centre Court tickets are incredibly hard to come by… and can be hugely expensive, but in places like Granary Square in Kings Cross, Canada Square Park in Canary Wharf and Wimbledon Village itself, you can enjoy the matches live on the big screen for free. Just bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the atmosphere with all the other fans (hopefully) under the summer sun.

While you’re there, you might even overhear a few tips about the latest Wimbledon odds… especially as the tournament starts to heat up.

Head to the Sports Pubs and Bars

Lots of historical pubs and sports bars in London regularly broadcast live sports, and you can get in for free – although, obviously, you’ll be expected to buy a drink or two! But it’s worth it. The atmosphere is amazing, and for football fans, the pubs around North London near the Emirates Stadium or in West London near Stamford Bridge are famous for their very excitable match-day crowds. Places to check out include:

  • Greenwood (Victoria): great for football, rugby, and cricket.
  • The Famous Three Kings (West Kensington): Often voted the best sports bars in the UK.
  • Flat Iron Square (London Bridge): A big-screen experience with food vendors and drinks.

During peak times, these spots can get rammed, so make sure you get there early.

Local Parks

London has lots of parks and open spaces that host various community sports events. From things like Sunday league football matches to amateur cricket games, you can spend a whole afternoon watching grassroots sports for free. Places like Regent’s Park, Clapham Common, and Hackney Marshes are great for a sporty afternoon out.

If you’re more into tennis, Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Battersea Park often have public courts where not only can you watch a game, but you can even have a go yourself!

Go to University and Amateur Events

London’s universities host lots of different competitive sports events – many of which are open to the public for free. University College London, King’s College, and Imperial College London have great sports programs. There are rugby, rowing, athletics, and even martial arts competitions that you can watch for free. All you need to do is check out their student union websites or social media pages to find the dates and venues.

And, of course, there’s the legendary Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge (although it’s not in central London), which attracts literally thousands of viewers along the Thames every spring.

Watch Events by the River Thames

Then, there’s the Thames, which often sees some of London’s most scenic and unique sporting events. There’s the London Marathon, which is completely free to watch, and thousands line the river to cheer on runners. If you want a sporting, party atmosphere that goes on for hours, this is it! It’s like a whole day festival with music, dancing… and even celebrities!

There’s also the London Triathlon and RideLondon (a massive cycling event) that pass through various parts of the city, which can be fun to watch.

The Best Things in Life Are Free!

Watching live sports in London doesn’t have to cost the earth! Whether you want to watch tennis in an outdoor screening, catch a last-minute goal in a crowded pub, or cheer on thousands of runners, there are ways to get the thrills of sports without spending a penny.

So grab yourself a pint, a picnic blanket, or just your walking shoes and see what’s on.
